Easy Two Ingredient Flaxseed Gel for Smooth Sleek Hair

Hello Maicurlies,

I had mentioned my simple two ingredient Flaxseed Gel (FSG) that I usually use whenever I am travelling/away from all my extra goodies at home; in a video I made about all my favorite DIY’s/Store bought products (while travelling) and was asked to share the recipe, so here it is!

This recipe is honestly one of the simplest gel’s I make and while it doesn’t involve a lot of ingredients, it is still packed with nourishment for the hair AND still does an excellent job at providing shine, definition and hold (without any crunchiness).

I have a few videos and posts about other FSG recipes that are more intricate and involve a lot more ingredients here and even a protein FSG to make a strengthening Gel). They also include more details about the benefits of using FSG for the hair (you know I have to give props to the fact that this gel is ALL natural, doesn’t include any chemicals and actually provides nourishment to the hair)!

So let’s get to the good stuff!

Ingredients/Tools:

  • 1/2 cup Flaxseeds
  • 2.5 cups Rosewater (reserve 1/2 cup for after boiling)
  • 3 teaspoons Almond oil

  • Pot
  • Spatula
  • Container
  • Pump bottle
  • NEW stocking cap

Additional/Optional Ingredients:

Instead of Rosewater, you can use plain water and/or a combination of both (Rosewater has been my go to because of its nourishing benefits for the hair and skin). In place of Almond oil, you can use any carrier oil of choice.

Method:

In a pot, I start by adding the Flaxseeds to the Rosewater, making sure that all of the seeds are submerged. Slowly allowing the water to form a gentle rolling boil on low-medium heat, while stirring, till I have the consistency of egg whites. I let the gel cool down completely to room temperature (the seeds still in the gel). I add the additional 0.5 cups of Rosewater to the gel and seeds, while in the pot to make it easier to strain the gell from the seeds. I add the oil to the gel, stir really well so that the oil and gel combine and then transfer into my pump bottle.

Additional Information:

FSG has a relatively short shelf life in general and should ALWAYS be stored in the fridge, especially since I don’t use preservatives, nor do I add ingredients that help to extend the shelf life in this particular recipe (to keep it simple). I ordinarily do eg Essential oils and Vitamin E oil. It is best to keep the gel in the fridge for no more than 2 weeks. An alternative option is to freeze the gel in an ice-cube tray and then when ready take out a few FSG blocks to defrost and use. You can reuse the Flaxseeds by storing in a container/airtight zip lock bag.

I would love to hear what you think of this recipe Maicurlies!

Medium Pin Curls on Fine Natural Hair

Hello Maicurlies,

So today I wanted to share my current obsession (actually I have yet another new one already) Pin Curls!

Medium Pin Curls

Let me tell you, I LOVE pin curls!!!!

What do I love about Pin Curls?

EVERYTHING! Since I have fine natural hair I tend to look for styles to helps to give me volume and the illusion of more density and pin curls give me that….they give me life! Generally I normally like to style on dry hair or slightly damp hair because I get more volume if my hair is not really wet but with pin curls regardless of whether I start on freshly washed hair or dry hair I adore the results! In my demo I did medium sized pin curls on freshly washed hair which gave me medium curls with bounce but they can be made smaller for tighter results or bigger for looser curls.

Products/Tools Used:

My styling process (especially when I start on wet hair) is to

  1. Set the Pin Curls
  2. Allow them to air dry
  3. Cover with a silk/satin scarf overnight
  4. Take down the bobby pins, separate the curls and style my hair (the following day)

However, there are times when I have to go out after setting my hair (example on the day when I recorded my video) so on those days I do my faux huge headwrap.

Faux huge Headwrap

No one knows my hair is curled up, pinned down and not in a big bun underneath and I don’t have to go out looking a little peculiar 😉 Then the following day I take down my hair and voila!

Here is my video of the process:

I would love to hear what you think! Do you do pin curls, would you try them?

Thanks

How to: Heatless Wave Curls on Fine Natural Hair – Jumbo Perm Rods

Hey Maicurlies,

First off I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year! I hope that 2015 ended well and that 2016 will be a bright year full of love, good health, great company, prosperity and happiness for you and your family 🙂

I wanted to start my blog post this year with a styling tutorial. I actually (hopefully) will be a little more “adventurous” with my styling options in 2016. So to kick things off here is my Heatless Wave Curls.

DSC03485

This is my “quick fix” styling option that I love! There are a few things I like about this style: 1. it sets in four hours so no sleeping with rollers in my hair (I have found a method that is not too uncomfortable but still prefer not to). 2. it is a great last minute styling option if I haven’t planned anything but need my hair done for an night out and 3. it gives my fine and thin hair volume!

Products/Tools Used:

Method:

After spritzing my hair with a tiny bit of water I added a little spray leave-in conditioner to help moisturize my hair (just to lightly moisten but not to make it soaking wet). I lightly detangle my hair to make sure there are no knots and then I spay a tiny bit of my Spray FSG to help give really light hold. My rolling method is to first try and make sure my hair is smooth, I then roll the perm rod up my hair (for one rotation) and then twirl my hair once, roll up again and twirl the perm rod towards the root before closing the perm rods. I literally let it set (without heat) for 4 hours and then take the rods down, separate and I am done!

It is a little easier to understand the “how to” in the video:

As I mentioned this is a “quick fix” styling option that I like to do whenever I haven’t had time the day before to plan for a hairstyle. The hold is really light and does not last for days and days therefore I will usually install the perm rods again after a day or two either during the day or at night (e.g. during the week when I have work and can’t sit in my office with perm rods on my head LOL).

I would love to hear what you think. Have you tried day time jumbo perm rod sets or any other perm rod sets done during the day? I would love to hear from you!

Thanks

Wash and Go with Flax Seed Gel

Hi Maicurlies!

wash-n-go FSG

I decided to make a video of how I do my Wash and Go using my Rosewater infused Flax Seed Gel (FSG). Only then did I notice that I never made a write up of my “Simple Wash and Go”. I need to update my Wash-n-Go Page because it only includes how I maintain a Wash and Go over a week. So I have a little bit of writing to do over the next few days. (I am on it)!

You can find my Simple Wash and Go method on YouTube as well as my Wash and Go with Flax Seed Gel. I also attached it to my Video page on the blog. These are the products I used (I linked all the recipes as well):

I apply the products in that order and have no issues to “trap” in the FSG with my mixed sealing oil because apart from being a great styling product with hold, FSG is moisturizing and nourishing for the hair and scalp! I also occasionally mix my FSG with my “Creamy” Leave-In Conditioner in a separate container and then apply it in one go.

I will have a detailed write up of the process … I promise!

Thanks

Rosewater Flaxseed Gel

Hi Maicurlies,

I have mentioned the benefits of Rosewater for Hair and Skin and in honor of Rosewater (which I LOVE) I have been experimenting. What did I do? Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel (FSG)! Verdict? I LOVE it!

Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel

Apart from that delicious Rose smell I love the moisturizing effects I get from the gel. I normally make FSG with either plain distilled water or distilled water and Aloe Vera Juice (AVJ) and my hair does feel moisturized from it but the Rosewater seems to give it that edge!

So after weeks of experimenting (I have to do trail and error for a few weeks before I announce anything) I can say I absolute love incorporating Rosewater to my gel!

This is the recipe I use:

  • 2 cups of Distilled Plain Water
  • 1/2 cup Rosewater
  • 1/2 cup Flax Seeds – (use less seeds if you want a thinner gel)
  • 1 teaspoon Grapeseed oil (use any carrier oil of choice)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Glycerin (optional – not everyone hair likes Glycerin)
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (use any EO of choice)

I manage to get 3/4 cup of thick FSG with this recipe. If you do not like your Gel to be thick you can use less flaxseeds. While the Gel is thick I do not get any flaking or crunch (if I use too much gel and my hair does feel a little “stiff” it goes away once I scrunch my hair.)

I have a video demonstrating how I make my Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel on YouTube and as always have linked it here on my Video Page. I also have my “original” FSG recipe listed on my Blog here. I love experimenting so I am sure that Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel will not be my last experiment but I must say this is going to be my staple.

Have you used Rosewater in your FSG? If so, what is your recipe and how does yout hair respond to it? If not, how do you make your DIY Gel?

Thanks

Hair Care Routines Posted!

I have written down my Hair Care Routines under (surprise surprise) Mai Hair Routines. At the start of the year I decided to try and use at least 80% -90% natural products in my hair care. I have slowly substituted certain items and wanted to try them for at least a few months to see if I like them or not so I have updated it! I LIKE!

This is just a basic summary of my routines. I will start breaking down my methods in  ‘series’ so that you see each of my processes step by step. For my blog I will do write-ups along with pictures, explaining my processes. I will also provide links to the videos in case there ends up being too much writing…I will keep you posted as and when I load up videos.

Thanks!

My Plans

So last night while all my creative juices were flowing I started to brainstorm on how exactly I would carry out this Blog. The last thing I want to do is bore you guys and since I am the sort of person who likes to keep things organized (as much as possible), I figured it would make sense if my Blog and YouTube Channel sort of correspond with one another. Not everyone likes reading through loads of information and some people prefer to read so if I keep both sources similar no one group misses out on anything. So here are my initial plans.

For the Hair Care Section:

I will breakdown my routines which starts with my wash days. On wash days I also incorporate a Deep Conditioner (DC) Treatment. I have 3 different DIY ones that and 1 store bought DC I use for different reasons (I will explain them in my routines section later). I also do my Apple Cider Cleanse on wash days. I will show you how I moisturize my hair and then each week or every two weeks I plan on doing a different Hair Style Videos/Blog write-ups. Following those will be Videos/Blog write-ups on my ‘mid-week styles’ which consists of Up-Do’s, if I am not trying to stretch out a particular look. I would love to get suggestions or even tips from you, so if there are any requests on styles I have not tried before I will look it up and try it out. This will give me a chance to learn something new as well!

I have to reiterate that I am not a professional Hair Stylist. I basically teach myself by watching and learning from others so I will have to ask you to please bear with me at times. Sometimes I might actually have Videos/Blog write-ups on things I tried that either did not work with my hair or perhaps I did not like. Now just because it did not work for me or I did not like a particular look does not mean it is “bad”. It just means it did not work for me…it might work for you!

For the Skin Care Section

I am going to start off with my skin care routines, DIY treatments, skin care tips etc. I will try and leave tips for all kinds of skin care (dry, oily, sensitive etc) but would also ‘focus’ on my type of skin (because I know that the best). If you guys are interested to see some videos about that I would be happy to do that as well.

For the Health Section

I basically will do the same as for the Skin Care; put up some tips, programs I follow etc. I am NOT a fitness expert and therefore do not want to risk someone following my own personal suggestions and getting hurt. So I will show you the direct links/sites/information from the fitness Gurus and leave the rest up to you to make up your own minds about if you want to follow them or their programs. I will also talk about Food!

So, that is my basic plan! Things might change up a little but I will always keep you posted!

Thanks
