Medium Pin Curls on Fine Natural Hair

Hello Maicurlies,

So today I wanted to share my current obsession (actually I have yet another new one already) Pin Curls!

Medium Pin Curls

Let me tell you, I LOVE pin curls!!!!

What do I love about Pin Curls?

EVERYTHING! Since I have fine natural hair I tend to look for styles to helps to give me volume and the illusion of more density and pin curls give me that….they give me life! Generally I normally like to style on dry hair or slightly damp hair because I get more volume if my hair is not really wet but with pin curls regardless of whether I start on freshly washed hair or dry hair I adore the results! In my demo I did medium sized pin curls on freshly washed hair which gave me medium curls with bounce but they can be made smaller for tighter results or bigger for looser curls.

Products/Tools Used:

My styling process (especially when I start on wet hair) is to

  1. Set the Pin Curls
  2. Allow them to air dry
  3. Cover with a silk/satin scarf overnight
  4. Take down the bobby pins, separate the curls and style my hair (the following day)

However, there are times when I have to go out after setting my hair (example on the day when I recorded my video) so on those days I do my faux huge headwrap.

No one knows my hair is curled up, pinned down and not in a big bun underneath and I don’t have to go out looking a little peculiar 😉 Then the following day I take down my hair and voila!

Here is my video of the process:

I would love to hear what you think! Do you do pin curls, would you try them?

Thanks

DIY Boosted Leave-In Conditioner (Spray)

Hey Maicurlies,

I am back with another DIY Update! This time it is my Spray Leave-In Conditioner.

Spray Leave-In Conditioner

This goodness is a modified version of my previous Spray Leave-In Conditioner which you can read about here. Similar to my updated Creamy Leave-In Conditioner I changed the recipe a little due to the fact that I no longer use the conditioner I use to use and the old mix was no longer as effective in moisturizing my hair as it use to be.

This recipe is quite simple, does not include too many steps and like I mentioned is a slight modification from the old one.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz plain water (I use bottled water)
  • Hibiscus petals (optional) I use about 10 – 12 petals
  • 0.8 oz leave-in conditioner (use any leave-in your hair likes)
  • 2 oz Rose Water
  • 0.1 oz Almond Oil (use any carrier oil your hair likes)
  • 0.1 oz Glycerine (optional)
  • 3 capsules vitamin E oil = roughly 0.15 oz

(Additional ingredients I sometimes use)

I sometimes add 0.8 oz fresh Aloe Vera Juice (from my garden) I didn’t this time.

Essential Oil (any oil of choice) – I like the rose scent so I skip the essential oil.

Mixing Instructions

I first add the hibiscus petals to the water and let it sit while I add the other ingredients. In the mean time I pour the leave-in conditioner, rose water, almond oil, glycerine and vitamin E oil in my container. I then pour the hibiscus water through a sieve to catch the petals and then whisk. I pour the mix into a spray bottle and shake it before every use.

Spray Leave-In Conditioner

Substitute Ingredients

  • Honey or agave nectar –  instead of the glycerine (or skip this all together)
  • Any carrier oil of choice – instead of the almond oil
  • Arrowroot – can be added to the mix to give a little extra slip

Side Note:

This mix might be a little too light for those with coarser or thicker hair due to the fact that the ingredients I use are quite light weight. In case you do have thicker or coarser hair than I, you can either increase the amount of leave-in used, add a heavier carrier oil such as castor oil and/or double the amount of oil used in the mix.

When I use it/How I store it:

I like to use this mix when I want to lightly re-moisturize my hair or when I want to dampen my hair without getting it soaking wet before styling/restyling. The Leave-In is left out with the rest of my products (without needing to store it in the fridge). I have never had an issue with the mix going off or going rancid before I use it up, however, you can store it in the fridge just in case.

Do you use a spray leave-in? Do you make your own or use a store bought one? I would love to hear from you.

Thanks

The Heatless “Blowout” – Faux Blowout

Hey Maicurlies,

So as the title indicates I stretched my hair out using my heatless “Blowout” method. With this I really really get my hair stretched – it of course is not as stretched as it could be if I were to use a blow dryer but for a heatless method I love it.

Now before I start explaining, I want to point out…stress…that I work with dry hair to do this and I am UBER CAREFUL while manipulating dry hair. Manipulating dry hair can lead to damage if you are not careful, gentle and patient so I can not say it enough, I am SUPER CAREFUL with this otherwise breakage ends up being the result.

I have a video up of my method on my Channel which you can see below.

Products/Tools Used (click on the products listed for my recipes)

Prepping Tools

  • Hair bubbles
  • Hair Clips

I usually always start off with hair that has been stretched in some form just because it makes it easier to then completely comb out my curls. I am starting off with day 4 hair (a twist-out I only used my Leave-in no styling product when I set the twists).

Day 4 Twist-out

                                                                                                  Day 4 Twist-out

Process

Prep Hair – Split hair, lightly mist leave-in conditioner & seal with Oil.

Finger Detangle – I very carefully finger detangle

Comb – I comb out the curls really carefully and slowly

Option 1: From here I will apply my styling product to twist, braid, Bantu Knot etc my hair  or

Option 2: Otherwise I will wear my hair out with option two:

Faux Blowout when I wear it out.

I would love to hear what your method is. Do you use heat? How? If not what do you do?

Thanks
