Valentine’s Day Date – Protective Hair Style

Hello Maicurlies,

So in the spirit of Valentine’s Day I decided to so a styling video for a “Date Look”. (I think I might potentially do a second styling option – depending on if I will have time to record and edit in time before V-day).

I am keeping it simple (as always) and quick. The style looks quite “chic” a little edgy and works as a protective style as well so overall I like it! I also kept my product use simple too (once again as always).

So without further-ado let’s go!

Products/Tools Used:

  • Wide Tooth Comb
  • Soft Bristle Brush
  • Bobby Pins
  • Hair Bubbles
  • Hair Elastics
  • Dye Brush (pointy part to section my hair)
  • DIY Spray Leave-In Conditioner
  • Argan Oil
  • Cantu Moisturizing Twist & Lock Gel

It is easier to watch a demonstration rather than read how I did the style:

Tip: for those with shorter hair, you can use braiding hair to do this style by adding it to the middle and bottom section, and twisting your hair together with it. I would recommend either doing a loose flat twist with the pompadour section go backwards or just making three sections,  add braiding hair to all three and then make  two – two strand twists within each sections. (You will need to watch the video so that this is clearer).

Tip: In case you don’t want to redo the style in the morning my suggestion is to take down the bobby pins (it is never a comfortable night with them in and not necessarily a good idea). Use a scarf to cover your hair, paying attention to your edges and side; for a smooth look in the morning and then just re-pin the twists down. You might need to “touch up” your edges with a soft bristle brush but other than that, it should be fine!

So here is my “final look”. Like I said, if I can I will do another styling option too and hopefully have it up before the 14th!

Whether you have a Valentine or not, are celebrating or not, I hope you manage to have a lovely day Maicurlies!

The Heatless “Blowout” – Faux Blowout

Hey Maicurlies,

So as the title indicates I stretched my hair out using my heatless “Blowout” method. With this I really really get my hair stretched – it of course is not as stretched as it could be if I were to use a blow dryer but for a heatless method I love it.

Faux Blowout in a ponytail

                                                                            Faux Blowout in a ponytail

Now before I start explaining, I want to point out…stress…that I work with dry hair to do this and I am UBER CAREFUL while manipulating dry hair. Manipulating dry hair can lead to damage if you are not careful, gentle and patient so I can not say it enough, I am SUPER CAREFUL with this otherwise breakage ends up being the result.

I have a video up of my method on my Channel which you can see below.

Products/Tools Used (click on the products listed for my recipes)

Prepping Tools

  • Hair bubbles
  • Hair Clips

I usually always start off with hair that has been stretched in some form just because it makes it easier to then completely comb out my curls. I am starting off with day 4 hair (a twist-out I only used my Leave-in no styling product when I set the twists).

Day 4 Twist-out

                                                                                                  Day 4 Twist-out

Process

Prep Hair – Split hair, lightly mist leave-in conditioner & seal with Oil.

Finger Detangle – I very carefully finger detangle

Comb – I comb out the curls really carefully and slowly

Option 1: From here I will apply my styling product to twist, braid, Bantu Knot etc my hair  or

Option 2: Otherwise I will wear my hair out with option two:

Faux Blowout when I wear it out.

Faux Blowout when I wear it out.

I would love to hear what your method is. Do you use heat? How? If not what do you do?

Thanks

Stretching My Hair Without Heat (Using a Braid-Out)

Hello Maicurlies!

cover

I just wanted to pop on and say that I finally have a new video up! Yes, my first 2014 Video! I recorded how I stretch my hair using a Braid-Out. As some of you may know I do not use heat on my hair (I do not own a Hair Dryer or Flat Iron) because I am useless at using them…at least from when I had relaxed hair. I do not want to push it because I am sure I will end up frying my hair LOL.

In order to take advantage of the length of my hair and to try diminish tangles I use heat free methods to stretch it. One of them is to fluff out a Braid-Out. My “method” is really simple. I basically just completely separate and fluff out a Braid-Out and that is it! Braiding my hair seems really elongate my curls (I stretched my hair when I did the Faux-Fawk.) I do not end up with “straight” hair… just elongated hair.

When I actually properly plan a style, I generally will stretch my hair as a “prep” and then Twist, Bantu-Knot etc, this way I get “longer looking” results.

I have a video of my method on YouTube of course linked it to my Video page here. I also finally have a write-up and some pictures of my process here. I do have other methods which I will continue to add to the Blog and Channel.

What do you do to stretch your hair? I would love to know! 🙂

Thanks
