DIY Moisturizing & Fortifying DC (Pink CoCream Hibiscus – update)

Hey Maicurlies,

Yup, I’ve got an updated Deep Conditioner I would like to share with you!

DIY Moisturizing & Fortifying DC

I’ve actually updated most of my DIY products (I do this whenever I feel like my hair is no longer responding as well as it use to). Sometimes our hair can be accustomed to a product/treatment and needs a change. I’ve posted my previous DIY Moisturizing DC that I used routinely on a weekly basis in case you want to compare the ingredients of both concoctions.

A lot of the ingredients I use now are also part of my “old” mix with one new ingredient and a twist to my old oil. What I LOVE about the DC is that it’s packed with moisturizing properties and also has a kick of strength to help fortify the hair at the same time. My hair feels absolutely fabulous after I rinse it off (as we speak I just rinsed mine out after using henna…it feels sooo good!) Aside from all that, it is so pretty isn’t it?! 😀 And it smells AWESOME (Yup i took a ton of pictures just to prove my point).

I make A LOT of the DC and freeze part of it in silicon molds and then put the DC “bars” into a sandwich bag that’s stored in my freezer for future use. The freezer helps “preserve” the DC and also means I don’t have to remix every single week. When I want to use them all I do is take out the amount I need (3 – 4 bars to cover the length of my hair completely) and place them in a heat proof bowl to gently warm it up in a double broiler (the DC is cold if it is not warmed up and my hair likes slightly warm DC and so does my fingers and scalp lol). I am NOT cooking or boiling the DC just letting it melt and lightly warm up. I then apply as usual, starting from ends to root. I cover my hair with cling film or a shower cap, a plastic bag and then layer on a scarf too. I also warm up a facecloth by dunking it in warm water, wringing  out the excess water and placing it over the cling film/shower cap for a few minutes. The point is to keep my scalp and the DC warm since this helps to open up the cuticle of the hair and allows the moisturizing and fortifying properties of the to DC penetrate the hair strands.

So without further ado here are the ingredients:

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 11 oz. Moisturizing Conditioner – provides the base for the moisturizing DC (use your favorite moisturizing conditioner – you can use less if you don’t want to make extra DC)
  • 1.8 oz. Plain bottled water provides additional moisture for the hair…H2o a naturals bestie!
  • 0.2 oz. Hibiscus powder* – provides strength, shine, luster and conditions the hair
  • 2 oz. Organic Coconut Cream – provides strength
  • 0.8 oz Rosewater – provides moisture, shine, soothes the scalp & re-balances the pH of the hair (smells AMAZING)
  • 0.2 oz. Rose Infused Oil (I use rose infused almond oil but you can use any carrier oil of choice) – a light oil that helps to seal in the properties of the DC, provides shine, softens the hair, provides luster and smells AWESOME
  • 0.1 oz. Glycerina humectant the draws water in the air to the hair (if you hair doesn’t like glycerin you can omit it or replace it with Honey/Agave Nectar/Aloe Vera Juice)

*try to use finely sieved hibiscus powder. I make my own hibiscus powder but didn’t sieve it a lot on the day but once I rinsed out the DC I had absolutely no “bits” in my hair (I only rinsed my hair once). Note: Hibiscus gives off a red/purple tint to the hair and is most obvious on blond/bleached/light hair therefore if red undertones are not something you want do not add hibiscus.

Mixing Instructions

Mix everything together in a large container in any order. After you have combined everything I suggest whisking the DC to ensure everything is well combined. (Split the mix in 2 containers to avoid your kitchen and yourself from getting splashed)!

DIY Rosewater Flaxseed Spray Gel

Hi Maicurlies,

So I have been experimenting again! And I am excited to share my…

Flaxseed Spray Gel

                        Flaxseed Spray Gel

Yes you read that right, DIY Flaxseed Spray Gel!

Now let me clarify, it is basically Flaxseed Gel that I dilute down to make it thin enough to pass through a spray pump and spray out evenly… I LOVE it!

I have a video up explaining my process (below)

How I make it

To make my mix I use my DIY Rosewater infused Flaxseed Gel recipe and then add extra

  • Rosewater*
  • Plain bottled water*

to thin it out. I also throw the mix in my blender to pulse it and that is it!

*To water it down you can use any liquid of choice. I choose to use Rosewater and plain water because I actually use them in my Flaxseed Gel recipe and because I my hair loves them.

You watch the video  of how I make my DIY Rosewater infused Flaxseed Gel below:

Remember

When making the spray, there are two things you need to make sure of:

  1. You are using a spray bottle that will evenly mist out the spray instead of “spit out” the gel.
  2. You have the right consistency so that the pipe of the spray will actually pickup the gel.

*It might take a bit of trial and error till you find the right container and get the right consistency for your spray.

Flaxseed Spray and Regular Gel

                                             Flaxseed Spray and Regular Gel

When do I use the spray?

  • I like to use this on dry hair since it is gives a light hold so using it on wet hair would just further dilute down the gel.
  • I use it to help tame flyaways
  • Lightly holdup an updo
  • When I do not want to dampen my hair with too much products (e.g. when my hair is stretched)
  • When I want to have gentle hold on a twist-out with out resorting to using a lot of gel (e.g. if I need to touch up a twist-out but do not want to waste products on hair that will be washed in a day).

Do you use a spray gel? If so what do you use? I you try Flaxseed Spray Gel I would love to hear about your experiences!

Thanks

Rosewater Flaxseed Gel

Hi Maicurlies,

I have mentioned the benefits of Rosewater for Hair and Skin and in honor of Rosewater (which I LOVE) I have been experimenting. What did I do? Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel (FSG)! Verdict? I LOVE it!

Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel

Apart from that delicious Rose smell I love the moisturizing effects I get from the gel. I normally make FSG with either plain distilled water or distilled water and Aloe Vera Juice (AVJ) and my hair does feel moisturized from it but the Rosewater seems to give it that edge!

So after weeks of experimenting (I have to do trail and error for a few weeks before I announce anything) I can say I absolute love incorporating Rosewater to my gel!

This is the recipe I use:

  • 2 cups of Distilled Plain Water
  • 1/2 cup Rosewater
  • 1/2 cup Flax Seeds – (use less seeds if you want a thinner gel)
  • 1 teaspoon Grapeseed oil (use any carrier oil of choice)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Glycerin (optional – not everyone hair likes Glycerin)
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (use any EO of choice)

I manage to get 3/4 cup of thick FSG with this recipe. If you do not like your Gel to be thick you can use less flaxseeds. While the Gel is thick I do not get any flaking or crunch (if I use too much gel and my hair does feel a little “stiff” it goes away once I scrunch my hair.)

I have a video demonstrating how I make my Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel on YouTube and as always have linked it here on my Video Page. I also have my “original” FSG recipe listed on my Blog here. I love experimenting so I am sure that Rosewater Infused Flaxseed Gel will not be my last experiment but I must say this is going to be my staple.

Have you used Rosewater in your FSG? If so, what is your recipe and how does yout hair respond to it? If not, how do you make your DIY Gel?

Thanks

Rosewater For Natural Curly Hair

Hello Maicurlies,

rose water

Today is another “ingredient feature” day! And the subject is going to be Rosewater! I honestly do not know where this absolutely beautiful product has been all my life but I am so happy to have met it! (Just by writing about it puts a smile on my face and reminds me of that beautiful intoxicating smell!)

Right lets get down to business shall we.

Rosewater

In Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Rosewater has been a popular natural ingredient that has been used in cuisine and for health. It should come as no surprise then that companies around the world have started to incorporate Rosewater into different beauty supplies and hair products are no exception (with good reason!)

Below are some of the reasons why I use Rosewater (and why you might want to try it out!):

  1. It is known to help revitalize the quality of your hair due to Its natural moisturizing and nourishing properties.
  2. Rosewater is effective in treating hair loss due to the fact that it helps to simulate the scalp.
  3. There are no artificial additives or chemicals (if you purchase pure Rosewater) making it a ‘non-toxic’ product! (Just make sure you are not allergic to Roses.)
  4. Should you suffer from mild scalp irritations or dandruff Rosewater can be used to help sooth irritations.
  5. It leaves your scalp feeling ‘fresh’ and your hair smelling great!

How to use Rosewater:

  • You can add it to any of your DIY products e.g. Leave-In conditioner, Flax Seed Gel, Deep Conditioners etc. Remember to use a preservative and store the product in a fridge if you are going to mix Rosewater with Oils (in large quantities and want to keep it for a few weeks) otherwise stick to making smaller quantities frequently.
  • If your Shampoo tends to dry out your hair you can add a little Rosewater with the shampoo – it will moisturize your hair by reducing the “dryness”, soften, give your hair shine and your hair will smell great throughout the day!
  • You can mix equal quantities of Rosewater and Glycerin together to help moisturize your scalp by using it as a “massage oil”. (Rinse it off after 30 minutes – 1 hour.)
  • If Glycerin is not your friend, then you can use any carrier oil e.g. grapeseed, jojoba, almond oil etc with Rosewater and use it as a “massage oil” for your scalp.  (Rinse it off after 30 minutes – 1 hour.)

I would love to know if you incorporate Rosewater into your routine!

Thanks
