Second Styling Video – Ballet Bun is up on YouTube

A lovely Good Morning All!

Ballet Bun (No Donut used)

Ballet Bun (No Donut used)

This is just a quick post to state that I have my 2nd Styling Video the “Ballet Bun” up on YouTube! As always I also have a link here. I also plan on finally writing up my “Normal Regular Bun” tutorial and the “Ballet Bun” tutorial. I am brain storming on how and when I will be doing different styles so I will get there …eventually :D.

It is funny how much more comfortable I am behind a computer screen as opposed to in front of the camera… I still need to work on that.

Anywho… I also recorded my first “Skin Care” video on my Face & Body Scrub so I am editing a few videos at the moment. As soon as something has been loaded up you will be the first to know!

Have a fantastic day Maicurlies!

Thanks

First Styling Video – Regular Normal Bun Is Up on YouTube

Good Evening Maicurlies,

buns

I did it (doing my happy dance)… I made my first styling video! So yes I have my Regular Normal Bun Video up on YouTube. It is nothing fancy at all but I do like to turn to it when I want to do a really really simple protective style or when I do not want to bother doing a big style (especially if it is going to be wash day in the next day or two.) You can watch the Video here.

The tools I use are not really “tools” but regardless: I use a super stretchy hair bubble (without the metal ending), bobby pins and my DIY Spray Leave-In Conditioner.

I should have the write up of the process on my “Buns” page in the next day or two (it really is very easy.)

Hope you enjoy my styling and the future ones!

Styling Introduction Video Uploaded on YouTube

updos

YES..so the time has come… I am going to start with the styling videos *biting my nails*! I really am excited to start this but super nervous as well because as I have mentioned numerous times…I am not a professional hairstylist nor a styling “guru”!

Here is a quick video explaining what I plan on doing. I will start off with my simpler styles at first and then take it from there. I also have some styles that I had tried when I was newly natural and at the time some of them did not work out. E.g my first attempt at Bantu Knot-outs. They did not fair well at all and I decided that “it would never work for me”. This year I wanted to give them another go but did them a little differently you can read about both here and the end results were much better! So what I will do is mention if a certain style was attempted before and failed and then you will get to see what I do differently now. I have a couple of new styles in mind that I have never tried before but want to try out and I will record them as well (I am sure a couple will be epic fails LOL.)

I of course would LOVE to hear from YOU! So please do leave me messages, suggestions etc of certain looks you think I should try!

Side note – apart from my styling videos I will also put a few Skin Care videos out because 1. I will otherwise probably end up running out of styles to do and 2. it is nice to have a variety of different topics…who knows this might lead to something else as well!

So I look forward to starting and as always I will have write-ups of styles (the ones I have not yet added and the new ones I want to try.) I really hope they workout because there is nothing worse than boring hair tutorials!

Have a lovely day!

Redcarpet Look Inspired from YouTube Vlogger MsVaughn

Good Afternoon Maicurlies,

Twisted buns

So as I have mentioned before I am not a styling “guru” by any stretch of the imagination. I do however love trying different styles (some of them are fails) and this weekend I was shown a BEAUTIFUL Updo through a lovely new friend on the Napturally Curly forum. She showed me a video by the stunning Vlogger MsVaughn. This is a link to her direct video (where I got the look from.) My first attempt and results look a little different to the original because 1. I did not blow dry my hair as I do not use heat and 2. my hair is a little longer than MsVaughn’s so her twists seemed to meet in the perfect place and I had to try and twirl them around to get one “unified” twist look.

For my first attempt I am quite happy with my results.

I did play around with the look a little and tried to make the twists a little “tighter” just to see what it would look like. So I have found a new favorite Updo and with practice I am sure  it will get better!!! 😀 I have put a little explanation of how I did the look on my Updo page here

Hair Care While Camping

Good Afternoon Maicurlies,

So I got back from a camping trip (on a stunningly beautiful beach with a lagoon on the other side)  and decided it might be a good idea to share what I take with my in terms of my hair care and what I do with my hair. Look at that view!

So first of all my hair and Ocean water (salt water) just DO NOT MIX! They are like Oil and Water…it is just a no go! It is fine while I am actually in the Ocean…it is after I get out and my hair starts to air dry that it becomes let us just say vengeful.  It feels weirdly crunchy because of the salt in the water. The salt content in the Ocean here is really high and like I said it is just not a good mix for me.

Anyways so while I want to be able to relax, enjoy the sea, swim, chill with friends, eat and party (who does not like a little partying) I also know that if I neglect my hair it will come back to haunt me 3 fold!

So when I go camping (especially if I will be at the sea) I take:

  • A spray water bottle
  • A little of my DIY (Creamy) Leave-In Conditioner – I pour some a little travel sized plastic container
  • A little of my Mixed Sealing Oils  – I pour some a little travel sized plastic container

Before I apply anything to my hair I ALWAYS make sure I at least rinse my hair (if I get it wet in the sea.) This helps to remove the salt build up, sand and dust. Then I proceed with applying the items mentioned above.

Now the spray water bottle helps “freshen my curls” but more importantly it helps to keep my hair from feeling dry as well as aids in distributing my DIY (Creamy) Leave-In Conditioner.

The (Creamy) Leave-In Conditioner helps to restore moisture that I know I lose due to the salt in the water, heat, wind and all the other elements that can affect the moisture of my hair.

Finally, the Mixed Oils is used to help retain that moisture I added through the water and (Creamy) Leave-In Conditioner.

Now I do try to keep my hair either in a protective style before I actually go camping otherwise I will put it up in a bun.

That is it Maicurlies! Let me know what you  do to protect your hair when you go camping, swimming etc.

Thanks

Page About my Twists is Done!

Good Evening Maicurlies!

I am happy to say I finally (yes finally) finished writing/taking pictures of the twists I use. So as I have mentioned in the Twists page under “Mai Hair Routines” I do not do anything extraordinary different. I part my hair use my DIY Leave-In conditioner (to moisturize) and apply my Mixed Oil (to seal in the moisture). I occasionally will use my DIY Flax Seed Gel and when I do I will first mix the Gel with my Leave-In Conditioner or Fluffy Coconut Cream – Oil in a separate container. All my recipes can be found under the “Mai Hair Routines” Tab. Please do let me know how you do your Twists!

Thanks

Started with my Up-Do’s Page!

DSC03229

Hi Maicurlies,

So I have finally started to load up some of the images of my Up-Do’s. My “method” is really very simple: I pin my hair back with bobby pins! I will sometimes put a twist in there somewhere or accessories it but my Up-Do’s are basically my “simple” styles. While I like to keep it simple I also try to keep my ends tucked away so they are protected.

Do let me know what you think. Here is a quick link to the page. Otherwise it can be found under the “Mai Hair Styles”.

Have a fantastic day!

Thanks

How to ride in the open air

Good Afternoon lovelies,

So I wanted to share a little “tip” (if I can call it that). I actually think I might dedicate a page to “tips” or something like that! Anyways….so I recently traded in my old car to my dealership and got a nice “almost brand new” car! Annnnnd it is a convertible!!!!  So of course one obvious benefits of a convertible is driving around with the car-top down… “what about the curls?!?!”…you might be wondering.

Now I am not just bringing this up because the driving around in the open air can cause a styling mishap – e.g. if you have spent 2 hours styling your hair in a particular way (especially if you have quaffed your hair so that it is sleek,  defined, laying down etc.) Yes the wind, humidity, heat, dust and all other elements will impact how your hair looks at the end of the ride but in my opinion the most important part is that all of the elements can dry out your hair!

Even if I were rocking a puffy, fluffy, big hairdo – while the elements might give me more volume; the dryness is something I can live without! So what is the solution you ask?

DSC03289

Twists!!! Yes twists! I would say drive around with the car-top down when you are rocking your twists – it can of course be braids, Bantu knots, of even a bun. (I do not tie my buns too tight therefore my little flyaways do their crazy dance so I always have a silk headband with me in case I can not tame them). If your hair is not out and flowing around, rubbing against one another and being overly exposed to the elements, having them in a protective style can help to at least try and reduce the exposure (it is not going to be 100% protected but it is better than nothing!)

You can even take it a step further by using a scarf over your twists, bun, Bantu knots, braids etc – once you have arrived at your destination you can take the scarf down if you do not feel like wearing it. I love showing off my twists when I do them well so I take off the scarf!

CAM00477

So there you have it! My little tip on what you can do with your hair if you do plan on cruising around with beautiful fresh air filling your lungs! I would LOVE to hear what you think and if you have any suggestions do let me know!

Enjoy the day!

Thanks

Hair Styles Written Up

Alright guys so I just wanted to give you a very quick summary of all the Hair Styles Write-Ups I have done so far (04.09.2013)

I have basically written up:

  • Bantu Knots (this was done back in 2011 so I need to revisit this style and modify it)
  • Buns (I wrote up one of the 4 methods I use – I need to write the remaining 3)
  • Elongated Ponytail (Inspired by a YouTube Vlogger)
  • Twists (I basically explained my process of how I did my first “mini twists” but I will be adding how I do my “normal” twists which are medium sized as well as my overnight chunky twists).
  • Wash-n-Go

Click here to go to my Hair Styles Overview page. There are a few missing because I want to have images to demonstrate. It is easier to be able to see what I am trying to explain along with writing it. So as soon as I do the styles I will be loading up pictures and making write-ups.

I really do hope you guys find this interesting!

Thanks

My first Small Twists

So I decided that I wanted to make my first attempt at (drum roll please) SMALL TWISTS ( I would like to call them Mini-Twists). Since my Natural Journey (mid 2009) till now I have NEVER attempted to do mini twists. I do normal sized twists (medium) and chunky twists but the thing is I never properly part my hair. I do not bother being particular about the parting so they are not aliened or neat. I normally just cover my hair with a scarf when I have them in twists (to hide the messiness) and then when I am ready to take them out I unravel the twists and rock a twist-out.

So yes I decided to do small (mini) twists and Oh My God it took forever! My little behind went numb half the time because of all of the sitting!

So I have photos of the finished look but not the process. It really was not a planned style but the basic concept of my twists are the same as everyone else’s. I will have more details into my experience etc. under the Mai Hair Styles Tab – subheading Twists. You can go directly to the page here

I am not sure if I will rock a twist-out after this but if it does not look too bad when I take them down I will leave them as twist outs before detangling.

Thanks
