About Maicurls

I got inspired write a blog due to my passion about my Natural Hair. It took me a while to find my way with my Hair...but I wouldn't change a thing now! I basically got to know my Hair through the help I found online (YouTube, Forums, Blogs etc) and want to "give back" by sharing what I have learnt over the years. My blog mainly consists of information about Natural Hair Care, Do It Yourself recipes and and tips I've learnt from all of you. I also share Skin Care and Health (Exercise) tips.

Bantu Knots Page Updated!

Hello Maicurlies,

So I finally did it…. I reattempted my Bantu Knots again! And let me tell you! I am loving the new and improved results! I had tried them in the past (2011) and did not like the results so I thought “Bantu Knots are not for me”…but it looks like I might have been wrong!

In my “Bantu Knots” page under the “Mai Hairstyles” Tab I had mentioned where I think I went wrong back in 2011 and noted down a few things I would change when/if I revisited them and I did. Now the end results are not “perfect” but I think that I will get better with practice… I also think I might have been a little too “fluff happy” and separated them a little too much but nevertheless I still enjoyed the light, fluffy and bouncy curls! Click here to get more details and see the end results!

Let me know what you think!

Thanks

DIY (Spray) Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner Video Uploaded

Good Morning Maicurlies,

leave-in conditioner

I am starting with my “Daily Routine Series” videos on YouTube as I finished off my “Weekly Routines Series”. My Daily Routines consist of two parts: Moisturizing my hair and then Sealing in that moisture. The first video demonstrates how I mix my “DIY (Spray) Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner”. You can see the video here or read through my mix under the “Mai Hair Routines” Tab titled “DIY Leave-In Spray”.

My spray is really “light” and therefore I use this when my hair only needs a little moisturizing. I usually use this in the morning on days when my hair is not extremely dry and will occasionally also use it at night (before bed) just to make sure my hair remains supple and moisturized.

What is your favorite “light” moisturizer?

Thanks

Page About my Twists is Done!

Good Evening Maicurlies!

I am happy to say I finally (yes finally) finished writing/taking pictures of the twists I use. So as I have mentioned in the Twists page under “Mai Hair Routines” I do not do anything extraordinary different. I part my hair use my DIY Leave-In conditioner (to moisturize) and apply my Mixed Oil (to seal in the moisture). I occasionally will use my DIY Flax Seed Gel and when I do I will first mix the Gel with my Leave-In Conditioner or Fluffy Coconut Cream – Oil in a separate container. All my recipes can be found under the “Mai Hair Routines” Tab. Please do let me know how you do your Twists!

Thanks

Started with my Up-Do’s Page!

DSC03229

Hi Maicurlies,

So I have finally started to load up some of the images of my Up-Do’s. My “method” is really very simple: I pin my hair back with bobby pins! I will sometimes put a twist in there somewhere or accessories it but my Up-Do’s are basically my “simple” styles. While I like to keep it simple I also try to keep my ends tucked away so they are protected.

Do let me know what you think. Here is a quick link to the page. Otherwise it can be found under the “Mai Hair Styles”.

Have a fantastic day!

Thanks

Curly Travel Tips

Hello Maicurlies,

I like that…Maicurlies!

Anyways…so I am going to be going on a little get away at the end of the month! Just a quick weekend getaway so I figured I would note down a few tips about my method of what I take when I travel  (for my hair). I hope that some of my pointers might help make it a little easier when you travel!

There are a few things you might want to keep in mind:

  1. How far are you going?
  2. What are you planning on doing?
  3. Where will you be staying?
  4. How long will you be staying?

How far you travel – takes into consideration the distance of your trip (will you be driving or flying) because this leads to how much/many products you can take with you – especially if you are flying (e.g. the space of you luggage, luggage weight restrictions etc).

What you plan on doing – addresses things like are you going to be bungee jumping, sky diving, swimming, relaxing etc. All this can factor into what you need to take with you and what you can actually do with your hair.

Where you will be staying – relates to where you will psychically be staying e.g. a hotel, apartment, tent, caravan etc. For example if you are camping then you might not have access to fresh running water like you would if you were staying in a hotel. If you are staying in an apartment you will have access to a fridge which means you can actually store products (if you make your own.)

How long you will be staying –  determines how long you will be away and the amount of products you might need to take with you for the duration.

Now for me I am a little be of an organization freak! (No shame in admitting it) but this means that I plan everything and I mean EVERYTHING.

My “go to” method is to:

  1. Determine if I need to have my hair in a protective style before I leave. For my upcoming trip, I would not need to put my hair in a protective style because it is only for 2 days, I am not planning on doing anything crazy (like jumping out a plane) and I will be staying at a hotel. If this were a camping trip I would most likely have my hair in medium sized twists or up in a bun.
  2. I put everything I plan on taking with me in little containers. (I have to admit that I am a bit of a hoarder when it comes to collecting containers of products I have used up and family have used up.) So for me it is easy to just put little amounts of things I need in travel sized plastic containers.
  3. I scotch tape the lids of the bottles so they do not leak all over my clothes! There is nothing worse than arriving and opening up your bags only to find out your conditioner has leaked all over your beautiful black dress!

Products I make sure I take:

  • Leave-In Conditioner – There is no way I travel without it since this is how I moisturize my hair and I like to moisturize everyday (sometimes two times a day if I am wearing my hair out and about.)
  • Conditioner – no matter the duration of my trip I always take this with me because I might need to detangle or co-wash my hair.
  • Sealing Oil – Again another product I have to have with me to seal in the moisture.
  • I also make sure I have bobby pins, a few scrunchies, and my wide tooth comb just in case I need it.
  • Store bought Moisturizing Deep Conditioner – I only take this with me if I know I will be going to the beach or pool more than once. This allows me make sure my hair does not get dry because of the chlorine or sea salt.

And that is it!

What about you? What products are you “must haves” when you travel?

Thanks

DIY Protein Deep Conditioner Video Uploaded

Good Morning lovelies,

protein

So I finally recorded, edited and loaded up my Protein Deep Conditioner video here. I am a bit of a stickler to getting the video “just right” (which is why it takes me ages to load up and it still is not “just right” buuuuut if I kept on edited it would take me forever!)

Anyways so that’s a wrap for my Wash Day Routine! 😀 I am very happy to finish off one “series”.

I will be starting on my Daily Routines which basically is just to Moisturize my hair and Seal in that Moisture. I am looking forward to doing the styling videos (which will be after my Daily Routines Videos) so I can not wait till I am done with my Daily Routine videos. I will probably have 3 videos or 2 (if I can squeeze both my DIY Leave-In Conditioner mixes into one video.)

I hope you have a fantastic day!

Thanks

How to ride in the open air

Good Afternoon lovelies,

So I wanted to share a little “tip” (if I can call it that). I actually think I might dedicate a page to “tips” or something like that! Anyways….so I recently traded in my old car to my dealership and got a nice “almost brand new” car! Annnnnd it is a convertible!!!!  So of course one obvious benefits of a convertible is driving around with the car-top down… “what about the curls?!?!”…you might be wondering.

Now I am not just bringing this up because the driving around in the open air can cause a styling mishap – e.g. if you have spent 2 hours styling your hair in a particular way (especially if you have quaffed your hair so that it is sleek,  defined, laying down etc.) Yes the wind, humidity, heat, dust and all other elements will impact how your hair looks at the end of the ride but in my opinion the most important part is that all of the elements can dry out your hair!

Even if I were rocking a puffy, fluffy, big hairdo – while the elements might give me more volume; the dryness is something I can live without! So what is the solution you ask?

DSC03289

Twists!!! Yes twists! I would say drive around with the car-top down when you are rocking your twists – it can of course be braids, Bantu knots, of even a bun. (I do not tie my buns too tight therefore my little flyaways do their crazy dance so I always have a silk headband with me in case I can not tame them). If your hair is not out and flowing around, rubbing against one another and being overly exposed to the elements, having them in a protective style can help to at least try and reduce the exposure (it is not going to be 100% protected but it is better than nothing!)

You can even take it a step further by using a scarf over your twists, bun, Bantu knots, braids etc – once you have arrived at your destination you can take the scarf down if you do not feel like wearing it. I love showing off my twists when I do them well so I take off the scarf!

CAM00477

So there you have it! My little tip on what you can do with your hair if you do plan on cruising around with beautiful fresh air filling your lungs! I would LOVE to hear what you think and if you have any suggestions do let me know!

Enjoy the day!

Thanks
