Tips for natural-heads that enjoy swimming

Hey Maicurlies,

I came across an article on Natura Magazine about swimming as a naturalista. While the weather might be changing, some of us might be doing indoor swimming or lucky enough to live in tropical climates all year round so it can still be helpful. Plus you can never know too much right?

Scab Hair – A Naturalista’s Woe

Hello Maicurlies,

I read a really great article on Natura Magazine written by the insightful . The article is something I wish I had read while transitioning, especially seeing as I was completely clueless about natural hair and how to care for both my relaxed ends and natural roots.

“For Transitioners: A Lesson on Scab Hair” covers to topic of Scab hair; explaining what it is, why it happens, some of the ways you can tell if you have scab hair and how to take care of scab hair.

Like I said, very insightful and I am sure quite helpful for new transitioners or even those who might have recently big chopped, since scab hair not only affects new transitioners! If you are experiencing hard or “wiry hair” that just does not seem to want to remain moisturized and soft even though you are doing everything possible to take care of your new growth/transitioning, hair take a gander at the article. If you know you are using the right products and have a proper routine but nothing is helping, it might not be your method, you might have scab hair.

Have you experienced Scab hair? How did you deal with it?

Thanks

Simple DIY Deep Conditioners

Hello Maicurlies

As you well know, I am a DIY freak! I love the whole research and mixing process (some trails are a fail but that is part of the fun right?!) Anyways, I came across a post in Natura Magazine by TyLisa which covers the topic of DIY Deep Conditioners.

I of course have my own concoctions that I mix up for Moisture, Protein and Strengthening

It is important to have a balance of moisture and protein so that your hair is neither dry nor “mushy” or “stretchy” when it is over moisturized. Having a balanced routine means that your hair is receiving the right amount of nourishment to be healthy, thrive and grow.

There are three really simple yet effective DIY Deep Conditioners in the article “The World of Homemade Deep Conditioners“. If you are not the biggest fan of mixing a bunch of ingredients together these recipes are so simple and you probably already have the ingredients at home that you have to give it a try. Trust me once you get the DIY bug in you, you won’t want to stop!

The Importance of Ingredient knowledge

Hi Maicurlies,

I yet again came across a post from Natura Magazine that I found Interesting.

Read Ingredients first

Sneaky Ingredients: A List of “Other Names” for Dangerous Hair Product Ingredients“. As the name indicates the article touches on some common ingredients found in a lot of hair products that we might not be aware of. For example, you might recognize the name mineral oil or petrolatum however, there are different variations of the ingredient and it can come in all sorts of forms.

I know that I can be a little bit of an ingredient freak however, in my defense…I just do not like putting nasty stuff on my scalp, hair, skin or in my body. I also like knowing what I apply on and in my body.

Now not everyone will be anti certain ingredients and one of those examples are silicons. Some ladies actually prefer to use products that include cones because the tend to give some slip and makes the hair feel smooth. There is nothing “wrong” with having that preference…to each her/his own. (If you do use cones you will want to clarify your hair…I had to throw that in there LOL). I only advocate that you actually understand and know what you are applying to/in your body and make a decision based on that knowledge.

If you come across an ingredient you have never heard of or can not pronounce look it up! Try to fight the urge to purchase the product until you know what it includes. Do a quick search on your phone while you are in the shop if you can not wait till you get home.

Knowledge is power and nothing is more powerful that having full control of what you do with/to your body (this includes your hair)!

Like I said, it is not for me to preach about which ingredients you should avoid however, I do preach that you should at least be aware of what you are buying before you go ahead and spend your hard earned money on a product that includes ingredients you might not actually want to use.

Happy Reading Maicurlies!

Sulfates…yes, no, maybe?

Hello Maicurlies,

I came across another interesting article in Natura Magazine and wanted to share it with you. It touches on ingredients found in body washes mainly focuses on Sulfates.

“Sulfates: Should Your Body Wash Be Sulfate Free Too” basically asks whether one should opt for Sulfate free body washes due to the chemical properties of sulfates.

Now, I am not here to bash or cheer for Sulfates…everyone is free to decide what they want to use for their hair, body and health. I do have to say that I personally made a decision a long time ago to avoid sulfates (whenever possible) this not only includes my hair care but also my skin care. If you have been watching my YouTube videos or following my Blog you will notice I have mentioned a few times that I have super sensitive skin and therefore I am quite diligent in watching what I use. Like I said this is a personal choice, sulfates might not affect you in the same way it does me so to each his/her own. I just wanted to share an interesting article.

Disclaimer: I am not a scientist, dermatologist nor a doctor. I do my own personal research, consult with my doctor/dermatologist and base my decisions on what works for me and you should do the same. Please consult a doctor or dermatologist before you make any decisions for yourself!

Happy reading Maicurlies!

Eating Healthy On A Budget

Hi Maicurlies,

So I feel like I have neglected the “health” side of my blog a little simply because I have been doing a set workout program and schedule.

I do have a few tips that I have come across and will be writing about them shortly but to get us started I came across a really nice article on Natura Magazine that I think might be helpful for some.

It is about incorporating healthy eating while working with a budget.
