Hard Protein/Moisture Balance Treatment

Hello Maicurlies, 

Today I wanted to share something that has become a “hair saver” (for me). My Hard Protein/Moisture Balancing Treatment.

Hard Protein Treatment

This recipe has become part of my routine however, it is not something I do every week or even every month because as the name suggests it is a HARD protein treatment. Before I delve into the details of what I use, how I mix, how I apply etc. it is important to point out a few things.

  1. This is an extremely hard protein treatment that should only be done once every 2 – 3 months (some might only want to do this 2 times a year).
  2. I have been told that this feels/acts like the 2 step ApHogee Protein Treatment therefore if you have tired that before, keep in mind how often you have used it/how you hair felt afterwards. Do not do both this and ApHogee treatments since they work similarly and you might end up with protein overload!
  3. It is vital to do a Moisturizing Deep Condition (DC) after. VITAL! Your hair will feel hard, brittle and almost straw-like (this is normal) however, it should not feel like that after you have done the Moisturizing DC. Without the moisturizing DC you will not have a protein/moisture balance and that will just result in breakage (not good)!
  4. If your hair does still feel hard after your Moisturizing DC, do another DC again!
  5. Ensure you have fully and properly detangled your hair before you apply the protein mix. Protein makes the hair hard (and this one does so extremely well) and if you haven’t detangled your hair beforehand you will only end up breaking hair in the spots where you have knots as you try to distribute the mix.
  6. Work with freshly washed, clean and damp hair to remove any product buildup which will allow the protein to latch on and penetrate the hair strands (this is when you would detangled your hair).
  7. Once the mix is on your hair DO NOT TOUCH YOUR HAIR!
  8. Leave the mix on for no more than 15 minutes!
  9. Some people like to use a drier/hooded drier after applying the protein to help dry the hair however, since I do not use any form on heat I do not suggest this step in my demonstration. (If you do decide to use heat, please ensure it is not set to high because you can cause damage).
  10. Once the time is up use your shower head/faucet (warm water) to rinse your hair going in a downwards motion. After you let water run over your hair slowly use your finger tips to help ensure all of the protein has been rinsed out (gently). You can use conditioner after you rinse to make sure the protein is out.
  11. ALWAYS DO A MOISTURIZING DC!!!!! (Sorry but I have to stress this part).

Ingredients/Tools Used:

Hard Protein Treatment Ingredients

  • 7 oz Hot Water (I used bottled water)
  • 0.24 oz Gelatine 
  • 0.5 oz Pure Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
  • Applicator bottle
  • Bowl/container (to mix)
  • Spoon
  • Essential Oil (optional if you can’t stand the smell of ACV but the ACV smell will go away anyways after you rinse and DC your hair). 

Mixing:

Sprinkle the gelatine over the water (while it is still hot) and stir to dissolve the gelatine. Add the ACV, stir again and pour into your applicator bottle. Allow the mix to completely cool down (if you plan to add EO add it after the mix has cooled down). 

Application

While you are letting the mix cool wash and detangle your hair so it is free from products, this will allow the protein to attach and absorb into the hair strands easier. Section your hair into parts to make it easier to work with and pour the mix from root to tip, paying particualr attention to the ends since this is where breakge occurs most frequently. Distribute the mix by finger combing/wide tooth comb but be VERY CAREFUL since the protein will make your hair feel hard and can cause breakage if you are rough. (This is why it is important to make sure you have fully detangled your hair prior to application)! After you are done with one section LEAVE THAT PART ALONE, do not touch it anymore and move onto the next. Once you are done allow the mix to sit for no more than 15 minutes. Typically people like to use a drier/hooded drier while waiting for the 15 minutes however, I do not use heat and therefore do not take this step. If you do, please make sure that you do not bake your hair, you will see damage if you do!

After the 15 minutes using your shower head/facet let warm water run over your hair going in a downwards motion (do not use your fingers to manipulate) unitl you feel your have rinsed out the protein. Once you have rinsed with water alone then you can gently use your fingers to run over your hair to make sure it is protein free,  you can use a little conditioner to help ensure all the protein is out.  Follow up with a Moisturizing DC for no less than 1.5 hours and proceed with your styling. If you feel your hair still feels rough, dry, brittle you need to do another moisturizing DC to restore the protein/moisture balance!

I sort of came up with the mix because I decided to try and make my own whipped butter Deep Conditioner (DC). After a few experiments I came up with a combination that I loved and more importantly that my hair loved so I had to share.

In this recipe I use a combination of protein, a little bit of moisturizing ingredients (just a tiny bit) and butter, so the end result is a protein packed whipped DC butter! This butter DC works similarly to a regular Protein DC except that the addition of the whipped butter really makes my hair feel wonderful after rinsing it out. My curls pop, my hair shines and I do not get that stiff crunchy feeling you can sometimes get from regular protein DC’s. It also helps with shedding, breakage and strength. I will admit that I do not apply this as often as I do my regular Fortifying Protein Deep Conditioner because I love my butters and I am not a fan of washing it away (I am greedy like that)! 

Having said that, if your hair is protein sensitive then you might want to thread carefully (if at all). All hair requires a little protein, yes even though with protein sensitive hair, but you will want to modify the ingredients I use and also spread out when you apply the product so your hair doesn’t end up being overloaded with protein. (Alternative suggestions are below).

Ingredients/Tools Used:

  • 2 oz Whipped Butter (I used my DIY Whipped Shea Butter but you can use any whipped butter of choice).
  • 2 oz Deep Conditioner (I prefer using a Moisturizing DC since I add protein in this recipe).
  • 0.6 oz Lightly warmed up Rose Water – (can be replaced it with plain water).
  • 0.1 oz Gelatin (protein).
  • 1 Egg Yolk – protein (use the egg whites for breakfast or a face mask).
  • Spatula
  • Gloves
  • Bowl (for mixing)
  • Whisk
  • Container

Mixing:

I first re-whip my whipped Shea Butter just to make everything super fluffy. I then add in the DC and whisk again. I lightly warm up the Rose Water or plain water if you are not using Rose Water (it should just be warm not boiling). I sprinkle the Gelatin over the water and then stir to let it dissolve (set aside). I then add 1 egg yolk to the mix (I skip the egg whites because I always end up with bits of cooked egg in my hair if I add egg whites). Once the gelatin has dissolved I add the gelatin/rose water to the butter whip for the last time and then transfer to my bowl.

Application:

I apply the mix onto freshly washed (damp/wet) hair, cover with clingfilm, a shower cap and usually a scarf to keep my head nice and warm. The warmth helps to open the cuticles and allows the nourishing benefits to really seep into the hair. After 30 – 45 minutes I rinse out the DC with cold water. If you use warm water you run the risk of cooking the egg yolk in your hair and if you used the whole egg then the risk is even higher thanks to the egg white (cooked egg in your hair is difficult to get out)! I then reluctantly apply a moisturizing DC. I say reluctantly because my hair always feels awesome but doing a moisturizing DC helps to restore the balance of moisture/protein. 

Storage:

It is not recommended to keep this DC for later use due to the combination of the butter, liquid and egg yolk. If you have any extra then I would suggest storing it in your freezer (if you must I would just splatter all the DC onto your hair). If you have made the mix ahead of time do not keep it for any longer than a few days in your fridge (it MUST be kept in your fridge if you have to make it ahead of time) trust me, any longer and you will regret opening the container! If it has been stored in the fridge or freezer the butter will become hard so you will need to take it out at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before you plan to apply it. 

Ingredient Modifications/Alternatives: 

If you have protein sensitive I would be cautious about how you use this mix (if you opt to do so) and how often you use it. Too much protein can cause protein overload for anyone but those with protein sensitive hair are more susceptible to it. I recommend you

  • Make sure you use a moisturizing DC instead of a Protein DC.
  • Use either the egg yolk or the gelatin powder (not both).
  • Add more moisturizing ingredients e.g. glycerin/honey/aloe Vera juice. 
  • Leave the DC on for no more than 30 minutes and only apply it a couple of times a year.
  • Follow up with a Moisturizing DC for no less than 1 hour.

Protein Strengthening and Fortifying Deep Conditioner

A little while ago I wrote a post about a DIY Protein Deep Conditioner (DC) and raved about how much I liked my new mix. Since that previous post (read here) I have recorded a “how to” video of my recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 0.8oz. of warm plain water (to help dissolve the Gelatine)
  • 1.3oz. Unflavoured Gelatine
  • 4oz. Conditioner (I prefer using a moisturizing conditioner so my hair is overloaded with protein)
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 1.3oz hibiscus/green tea
  • 0.2oz Coffee Infused Almond Oil (you can use any carrier oil)

There are 3 things I want to mention about my mix:

  1. This is a STRONG Protein DC so if you have protein sensitive hair this probably is NOT for you.
  2. This recipe includes non vegan/vegetarian friendly ingredients but you can replace them with other ingredients if you wish e.g. yogurt or even an overripe avocado that has been blended and passed through a sieve.
  3. ALWAYS follow up with a moisturizing DC afterwards to restore the moisture/protein balance in your hair.

Mixing Instructions:

  1. First sprinkle the Gelatine over the warm water and stir rigorously to make sure everything dissolves. (You could also sprinkle it over the warm hibiscus/green tea)
  2. Add the dissolved Gelatine to the conditioner.
  3. Add the egg yolk (I use the egg whites for breakfast so I don’t waste anything).
  4. Add the coffee infused almond oil (you can use any carrier oil).
  5. Slowly pour in the hibiscus/green tea.
  6. For good measure I pour my mix into a tall container to whisk (a tall container helps to avoid splashing) and that is it!

How I apply the Deep Conditioner:

I only apply this mix every 5 weeks on damp hair has has been cleansed. After application I cover my hair with a shower cap or clingfilm, followed by a plastic bag and an old scarf to help keep my head warm or a damp and lightly warm face cloth. DO NOT USE  a steamer, heated cap etc. because it can cook the eggs in your hair! I leave the DC on my hair for 45 minutes to maximum 1 hour and then rinse it out and follow up with my Moisturizing Deep Conditioner to restore the elasticity balance in my hair.
