Henna Gloss Bar Experiments

Hey Maicurlies,

I am a liiiittle hyped-up at the moment thanks to my latest DIY mix.

Henna gloss bars

No these are not chocolates. It was also pointed out to me that they look like Reese Cups but nope they are not Reese Cups either.

I made henna gloss bars!!!

Picture a little girl doing the happy dance when she gets the gift she always wanted, that was me when the bars were set LOL! Anyways, like I mentioned these are still experiments that I need to try out so I can not claim total success yet but I can say they smell really good, hold their shape and were simple to make!

I searched DIY/Homemade Henna Bars online and for some strange reason it is almost impossible to find recipes. I did end up finding 2 types of recipes one of which I modified a little to my liking and made a small sample (2.5 bars) by changing the ratios.

So what are they made of you ask?

Henna, Coconut oil and Cocoa butter. Yes that is it!

I consider them as henna glosses because there is no dye release before I form the bars but you better believe I am also looking at making full strength henna bars 🙂

For those of you that are not DIY’ers and/or are not fans of using henna powder, there are a few popular companies that sell pre-made bars such as Lush & Henna Sooq. I have not used any of them personally and therefore can not confirm how fantastic they are myself but based on what I’ve read and reviews from curlfriends, they are awesome.

I will hopefully be testing out my bars next week and will keep you lovelies updated. I also got some tips from my online curlfriends on how I can attempt to make full strength henna bars (yay) so more experiments to come.

Have you used pre-made henna bars or have you made your own? If so, how do you use it? I would love to hear from you!

Thanks

I tried them but they are not the same the henna bars I bought in the store, there are not as conditioning as the ones i buy.

      Hi Karen,

Which recipe did you follow? The one mentioned directly in this post (which just mentions 3 ingredients) was an “experiment” as the title suggests. I did come up with a proper recipe along with ratios etc that works really well for MY hair in the end (also can be found on my blog).

I am not sure which recipe you followed but I am sorry to hear the henna gloss bars didn’t work out for you :/. As the saying goes “no two heads are the same” so what works for me might not work for you. Just in case you did not see the proper/full recipe, I did mention that the gloss bars are melted down and then either coconut cream/milk, conditioner or even green tea can be used to mix with it and then applied. That tends to provide the conditioning aspect. Henna and other ayurvedic herbs alone always tend to be drying on the hair. At least you always know you can reach for your store bought henna bars 😉

Hey love. I buy my henna powder locally from a market. There is this little old lady who’s family owns a farm and you can weigh out as much/little you want (it is grown locally) but I know a few curlfriends who buy theirs from Butter-n-Bars. They love and swear by it but I have personally not tried their henna.

You are so right! I actually have a body butter bar that I want to share and a lip scrub with a lip salve LOL. All of them would make for a nice little Christmas gift box. Need to set time apart to make videos and write-ups. Thanks for commenting hun! x

        Hey Cece 🙂

I like to use a lot of the ingredients I already have at home without having to resort to buying more and more. I make a little mix of cocoa butter/coconut oil and essential oil. Or cocoa butter with an infused oil of choice. Occasionally cocoa butter, Shea butter and and an oil. I don’t use bees wax 1. because I don’t have any and 2. because I have super sensitive skin and while bees wax is natural I feel like it is too much for my skin but bees wax can be added to make sure the bar remains a solid no matter what the weather is like (I just store mine in the fridge). “How to” will be coming soon! 😀
